My friend Sebastian has started working in a corporation.
It is an extraordinary story because it’s the story of a man who struggled much of his life with the demons of the past, going through the difficult path leading to “mental recovery”. While his peers followed his professional dreams, he tried to find and stabilize himself. When we met 6 years ago, Sebastian was 33 years old, he worked in services, and admittedly he was happy with what he had achieved in a professional context, but he had a sense of wasted time and wanted to reach for more.
Two years ago, just before the pandemic, Sebastian made the decision to transform his professional career and join a corporation. He wanted to develop competencies and change the working environment to one in which he will deal with knowledge-sharing specialists.
The first step he took was to complete his university studies and obtain a master’s degree. In the next step, he made good use of his network. He used a network of friends and clients, initiating conversations about his professional life, asking a lot of questions, gathering ideas, and looking for opportunities. In the end, he managed to find and finally define his professional goal.
Sebastian has been working for a corporation in the medical industry for 3 months. “A Man from Nowhere” – this is what you could say when assessing his CV, in which it is in vain to look for a connection with the industry in which he works. However, behind this CV there is a man who is a perfectionist, is intelligent, self-reflective, and has a remarkable ability to build relationships with people.
Yesterday I met Sebastian, who is just starting to work in the field after a series of training sessions. I saw his eyes twinkle as he talked about his work. I saw so much happiness and certainty in them that he chose the right one. “I love my job,” he said enthusiastically. And there was only the truth in it.
✳️ Choose potential over hard competencies and you will receive a huge commitment in return.
✳️ Never give up on your dreams. Reach for more.
